SJVRDC has helped to establish farmers markets in various rural areas throughout the San Joaquin Valley. Through the USDA Farmer’s Market Promotion Program (FMPP), SJVRDC has been able to to expand it’s farmers market efforts through its Rural Farmer’s Market Initiative: Low-Income and Food Desert Communities.

The initiative’s purpose and focus is to build local producer-to-consumer food outlets that will facilitate access to fresh fruits and vegetables for residents of disadvantaged food dessert communities. SJVRDC activities of establishing farmers markets include: farmers market manager training, public health compliance training for prospective vendors, cottage food operation training for local entrepreneurs, and implementation of farmers market promotional plans.
SJVRDC helped to establish three farmers markets in 2014-2015 in the cities of Biola, Firebaugh and Mendota.
